尼罗鳄是较大型的鳄鱼，平均体长3.7米，大者可超过5.5米，有不确切的纪录则长达7.3米。尼罗鳄是分布最广泛的鳄之一，在非洲大部分水域都能见到，在马达加斯加岛也有分布，有些种群生活于海湾环境中，在不同地区生活着不同的亚种，这些亚种彼此之间略有区别。
尼罗鳄以凶猛著称，可以捕食包括人在内的大型哺乳动物，也捕食鱼、鸟和小型鳄鱼等。尼罗鳄挖洞产卵，成鳄对卵和幼鳄精心照看。尼罗鳄的不同种群有些被列为濒危，有些列为易危。
