南美宽吻鳄口鼻部宽阔与扬子鳄有些类似，雄鳄体长可达3米，雌鳄仅1.8米。南美宽吻鳄生活于阿根廷北部、巴西东南部、乌拉圭和巴拉圭的沼泽、河流、红树林和湖泊中，食蜗牛、小型哺乳动物、鱼和鸟类。南美宽吻鳄修筑堆起的巢，产卵约10枚。南美宽吻鳄的栖息地是南美洲人口密度较高的地区，受到人类活动的威胁比较严重，属于濒危物种。
