黑鳄是大型的鳄类，体长可达6米，与密西西比鳄非常相似。黑鳄遍及亚马孙盆地中流速较慢的河流以及湖泊和森林交界的地区，以鱼、包括其他鳄鱼在内的爬行动物和包括家牛在内的大型哺乳动物为食，但很少袭击人类。黑鳄的繁殖习性也类似密西西比鳄。黑鳄由于捕食家畜，常被当地人捕杀，虽然被法律所保护，但是仍然属于濒危物种。
